While you're here, we highly recommend
the 12 minute drive north of Cambria to San Simeon to tour the famous
Hearst
Castle. And right now is the perfect time to see all the
amazing things about "The Ranch." Plan to take all the great
regular guided tours, Tours 1, 2, & 3, that show you the different
areas inside the 115 room "Castle" ... a name that William Randolph
Hearst never used. To him, this was his Country Estate ... one of his
vacation homes. He called it, "...my little ranch at San Simeon."
During the summer vacation season, Tour 4, the Garden Tour, is
also available.
During this tour, your guide shows guests around the
entire Estate via the Esplanade. Also included, are stops at the
hidden terrace, the Neptune Pool Changing Rooms, two levels of the
largest
guest house, Casa del Mar, sometimes called the Hearst Family house, and
down to the Wine Cellar in Casa Grande. This is an amazing look at the Hilltop.
And during the summer, the new Gardens & Vistas Self-Guided Tour
will be available. This is a unique opportunity that is available
starting after the regular guided tours end... up until sunset.
You will be able to stroll the outside garden areas at your own pace.
Bring your camera and stay in one spot until you get just the right
shot. You will see why the Gardens, also designed by architect Julia Morgan,
are like the "bow on the package.". Go to the links provided on this
page to find out about availabilities, schedules,
tour times, and prices. It is recommended
that you reserve your tour in advance, which can be done on their
Web site. Also, be aware that the
weather can be very different on the
top of the Hill (at 1,600 ft. it's usually warmer in the summer, colder
and wet in the winter) from what you experience at the Visitor
Center, so it's a good idea to dress in "layers"
and during the Winter months take rain protection, just in case!
During the Fall 2010, Tour 5, the Night Tour, is
available. Here the tour focus is on the people... who came here and
what they did. The lifestyle of the 1930's is brought to life with
the help of the volunteer trained docents who dress in period clothes of
the late 20's and the 30's. They act the part of guests and move
in and out of the tour groups as they create the very real feel of what
it was like to be a guest of William Randolph Hearst at Hearst Castle ~
after dark. These Evening Tours become booked in advance, so it's best
to call ahead for reservation availabilities. And in case you
didn't know, Hearst Castle offers Accessible Tours for guests who
need to use a wheelchair, can't walk distances or have trouble climbing
stairs. The Accessible Tour is all on one level with no stairs and
you move by a tram with your Guide from one section of the grounds to
another. Contact the ticket
office or log on to their website to book your tours and times. Have fun and be prepared to be amazed!
